How to care for Your Dog after a Spay
The day came when my dearest fur baby Mimi lee had to get spayed. As a doggo mom who’s always prepared for anything, I had to gear up to help my baby heal.
Day 1
Don’t freak out if your fur baby looks completely out of it. Their body has been through trauma, so dim the lights and let them rest.
Tip 1: Remember to limit their activity for 1-2 weeks post-operation. Playing and exercising too soon can cause their incisions to open up.
Tip 2: do not clean the incision. Cleaning the incision with water can cause infections. Pet parents need to keep the incision as dry as possible for at least a week post-op.
Tip 3: don’t freak out if the incision is a little red and swollen. This is completely normal and expected. If you see discharge coming out of the incision, contact your veterinarian provider. It is important to know that human pain medications should never be given to your dog.
Day 3
Tip 4: Put the cone on your dog to prevent them from licking their incisions. It might annoy them for a little while, but it’s all for their own good.
Tip 5: I know you probably want to hug your fur baby but avoid picking them up to prevent further injuries. If you have to pick up your dog for any reason, pick them up from the buttock and the chest area to prevent muscle movement near the incision site.
Day 6
Tip 6: During the recovery period, your dog might not be interested in food.
Day 9
Tip 7: Some doggos dislike peeing and pooing with the cone on. You can remove it when you give him/her a washroom break.
