How to Care for Your Dog in the Wintertime
Winter is just around the corner. However, for dog owners, daily walks will always be on the list. Here is how you can protect your pet from the winter cold.
1. Trim the fur on the paw
Trimming the fur on the paw is a must-do. It may seem counterproductive because after all, wouldn’t the fur keep your pup’s feet warm? The answer is no. The fur around the paws tends to catch snow. When it does, it will form solid ice clumps on the paws and these annoying ice clumps can cause damage to the pads of the paw.
2. Wash your dog’s feet
If you live in a city with snowy winters, you’d know the city ground is covered with deicing agents (Sodium Chloride). These deicing agents can cause damage to your dog’s paw pads. Make sure you wash the de-icing agents off when you return home.
3. Paw balm and Vaseline
Yes! you heard that right. Dogs need to moisturize too. There are many brands of paw balms out there. However, if you have Vaseline, it could come in handy. Apply the balm or Vaseline to avoid drying and cracking of the pads.
4. Not a paw bootie wearer? use Vaseline
Have you seen videos on the internet of funny dogs wearing shoes? Many dogs are uncomfortable with wearing booties when they go on walks. For dog owners living in snowy regions, paw protection is a must. This is where we can turn to the almighty Vaseline. Before you go on walks, apply a layer of Vaseline. This helps to protect the pads from chapping, and it will also protect your dog’s pads from chemical/ de-icing agents on the street.
